Draft Profile: Bio

From FCS-level James Madison to SEC All-American, Antwane Wells Jr.'s journey has been as impressive as it is surprising. Hailing from Richmond, VA, and Highland Spring High School, Wells initially went unnoticed as a recruit. Despite this, he excelled in high school, earning second-team All-Metro honors and contributing to two state championships. Wells' success continued at Fork Union Military Academy before he joined James Madison University (JMU), where he dominated, particularly in his sophomore year with 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Transferring to South Carolina, Wells quickly adapted to the higher competition level, becoming Spencer Rattler's primary target in 2022 with 928 yards and six touchdowns. His accolades include First-Team All-SEC honors and multiple All-American recognitions. Despite a foot injury curtailing his 2023 season, Wells showcased his talent with standout performances, such as his 189-yard game against Arkansas and his crucial plays in wins over Tennessee and Clemson.

Wells' senior year saw limited action due to reinjury, but his previous seasons' performances have firmly established his draft potential. Throughout his career, Wells accumulated impressive stats, including over 3,000 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns across both JMU and South Carolina. After the 2023 season, Wells transferred to Ole Miss, looking to continue his success in the SEC under Coach Lane Kiffin.

Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Physicality in all phases, thriving on contact and physical play.
  • Strong RAC (run after catch) ability with excellent balance and agility.
  • Soft, reliable hands capable of adjusting to off-target throws.
  • Consistent target who commands attention due to his reliability.
  • Strong route runner with the ability to create separation through physicality.
  • Competitive demeanor and high motor, difficult to bring down after the catch.
  • Excellent body control, able to contort for difficult catches.
  • Good downfield ball-tracking skills, making him a threat on deep throws.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks elite separation quickness, making it harder to shake defenders.
  • Not a pure burner, more explosive than fast.
  • Struggles with transitioning from catcher to runner quickly.
  • Inconsistent in contested catches despite his physicality.
  • Playing speed does not always translate to running past defenders at the next level.
Scouting Report: Summary

Antwane Wells Jr. is a highly competitive and physical receiver, known for his run-after-catch ability and strong hands. While he may lack elite separation quickness, his physicality and reliability make him a valuable possession receiver. Wells excels in creating plays post-catch and is effective in both short and deep routes.

His injury-plagued senior year may impact his draft stock, but his proven track record at James Madison and South Carolina showcases his potential. Wells' ability to adjust to higher competition levels and perform under pressure will attract NFL scouts looking for a resilient and versatile receiver.

Projected as a Day 2 pick, Wells' success in the NFL will depend on his ability to translate his physical play and competitive edge to the pro level. If he can refine his route-running and stay healthy, Wells has the potential to make an impact at the next level. With his transfer to Ole Miss for the upcoming season, Wells will have another opportunity to prove himself in the SEC and boost his draft stock further.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
