Leatherwood has been a steady performer during his time with the Crimson Tide. Originally being moved to guard in 2018 he then kicked out to tackle in 2019 and has remained there but many feel that he will need to move back into the interior in the pros as he has struggled to deal with quick rushers. A very long prospect he makes for an impressive presence on the line but could still stand to get stronger. Reports coming out of the Senior Bowl were not great, with some commentators identifying him as one of the biggest fallers of the week after he won only about half of his 1-on-1 match-ups.
Strengths
- Leatherwood is also one of the best run-blocking offensive linemen in this year’s draft class.
- Passes the eye test - impressive frame, thick lower half, and overall length.
- Has fluid body control with loose hips. Physical and tough with a good effort in the run game. Plays with a finishing attitude with an aggressive, nasty temperament.
- Has good footwork and technique. Balanced and agile pass protection set with excellent hand placement.
- Has the agility, technique, and size to contribute early in his professional career. Quick, active hands to latch on to defenders.
- He's infinitely coachable and athletically gifted with the ideal frame, physique, weight distribution, knee bend and hand strength to be molded into a special blocker.
- Moves well, and squares to finish on the move. Better anchor than his height suggests and capable of absorbing a punch and recovering quickly.
Weaknesses
- The former Crimson Tide lineman has a lot of talent in all areas of guard play, but he does have issues with his lateral movement being just average.
- Stops his feet after initial contact, relying on length but allowing the defender to get the corner or spin inside.
- Struggles to get low enough to maintain leverage. Won't be able to cut more agile NFL linemen because he's not sudden and gathers before lunging.
- Too often is pushed back into the pocket during pass protection becaus~ he bends at the waist rather than at the knees. Relies more on precise angles than physicality in the running game.
Leatherwood would compete instantly for the starting left guard role in the pros, it is debatable how he would handle the LT role though. We consider him likely taken at the top of the second round, possibly going late in the first.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects.
