Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
Best value of the weekend goes to the Bears for Williams: A.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Bears watched James Williams slide 54 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Spending an early pick on safety with running back, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Bottom line, with Jared Verse leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In slot 25 they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Brock Bowers
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 35 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick44 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
The board had Troy Franklin higher than pick 44, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick66 Rnd3 Calen Bullock
They jumped the gun on Calen Bullock, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick75 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. at Round 3, Pick 11 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick91 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in the 91st overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick111 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves running back, cornerback and other spots untouched.
Pick123 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at No. 123 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick143 Rnd5 Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith in the 143rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick174 Rnd5 James Williams
James Williams at Round 5, Pick 38 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
