Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Bears drew a line under the quarterback search with Williams: D-. Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In pick No. 1 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In slot 9 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A real need, handled.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan at Round 2, Pick 26 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Lynn Polk went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick88
Rnd3
Bucky Irving
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bucky Irving. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick111
Rnd4
DeWayne Carter
They let DeWayne Carter come to them and pounced at pick 111. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at No. 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Andru Phillips
They read the board right and Andru Phillips was the payoff at the 127th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
