Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Bears answered their biggest question with Williams. Grade: D-. Somebody took the Bears to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Corum.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
They did well to land Malik Nabers in slot 9, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
A tidy little value on Tyler Nubin in the 43rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk at Round 3, Pick 11 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Pick110
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mekhi Wingo. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111
Rnd4
Blake Corum
Taking Blake Corum in pick 111 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick123
Rnd4
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 123 on Maason Smith with edge rusher, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
