Draft Grade — Colts
Overall

FutureA
The Colts let Edwards fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Colts were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
The Edwards steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The veteran additions, Quay Walker chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In the end it comes back to Tyler Warren, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In slot 27 they get a seam-stretching tight end, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick54
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
They read the board right and Xavier Watts was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 22. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick95
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
Value with a capital V on Barrett Carter in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128
Rnd4
Will Howard
Will Howard in pick No. 128 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136
Rnd4
Cody Simon
A tidy little value on Cody Simon in the 136th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick151
Rnd5
Nick Nash
They paid sticker price for Nick Nash in No. 151, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick189
Rnd6
CJ West
CJ West in pick 189 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick232
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Taking Donovan Edwards in Round 7, Pick 16 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick245
Rnd7
Akili Arnold
Steal is underselling it; Akili Arnold at the 245th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
