Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA-
The Bears got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bears did exactly that with Baylor Cupp in the 237th pick. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Keion White deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

If Olumuyiwa Fashanu and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick No. 4 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value.
Pick5 Rnd1 Malik Nabers
In pick 5 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick34 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
No drama and no debate, Chop Robinson went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 2. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick69 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
They took Johnny Wilson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at slot 75, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick96 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
They liked Leonard Taylor III enough to skip the value, taking him in the 96th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick110 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at pick No. 110 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick127 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at pick 127. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick133 Rnd4 Beaux Limmer
Beaux Limmer at slot 133 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick146 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 146 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186 Rnd6 Brevyn Spann-Ford
A wild overpay on Brevyn Spann-Ford in Round 6, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick188 Rnd6 Christian Jones
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick225 Rnd7 Derek Wingo
They talked themselves into Derek Wingo at the 225th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick227 Rnd7 Carson Steele
Value said wait; Carson Steele in the 227th pick says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick232 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
They paid sticker price for Eric Gentry in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick237 Rnd7 Baylor Cupp
A big swing on Baylor Cupp at the 237th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
