The Cowboys let Horton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Tory Horton, the No. 113 name on the board, in Round 5, Pick 31.
Every board in the league had Gregory lower, and that gap is the story. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Ashton Jeanty slid further than he should have, and pick 14 is lovely value for the running back. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 44 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They read the board right and Deone Walker was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick117
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore in the 117th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick150
Rnd5
Tez Johnson
Somehow Tez Johnson was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick170
Rnd5
Tory Horton
You do not let a wide receiver like Tory Horton reach slot 170 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in No. 172 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Emery Jones Jr.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 174th pick is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick190
Rnd6
Upton Stout
A tidy little value on Upton Stout in pick No. 190, a step better than break-even. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
No edge and no loss on Jamon Dumas-Johnson in Round 6, Pick 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Eric Gregory
Eric Gregory at the 249th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
