Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B+
ValueB+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB
The Packers let Newton fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. Somebody in slot 92 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Josh Newton, the No. 59 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In No. 26 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Value with a capital V on Tyler Nubin in the 44th pick, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick51
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A tidy bit of business in the 51st overall pick, where Xavier Legette graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick58
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick83
Rnd3
Blake Corum
A tidy little value on Blake Corum in pick 83, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick92
Rnd3
Josh Newton
They will replay Josh Newton at pick No. 92 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cooper Beebe
They read the board right and Cooper Beebe was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 19. It fills a real need, too.
Pick135
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cedric Gray at slot 135 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick175
Rnd5
Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at pick No. 175 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick197
Rnd6
Justin Walley
Circle this one: Justin Walley at No. 197 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick217
Rnd6
Isaiah Davis
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Davis in Round 6, Pick 42, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd6
Zakhari Franklin
Fair-plus on Zakhari Franklin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick240
Rnd7
Steele Chambers
They barely believed it either: Steele Chambers still on the board at pick 240. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
