Best value of the weekend goes to the Bears for Smith: C+. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bears were there to profit. Ainias Smith, the No. 175 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 225. The final tally is a middling C+.
If Robinson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. With cornerback and linebacker unsolved, spending premium capital on defensive back is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
If Kool-Aid McKinstry and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
A surprising call. With cornerback and linebacker still to address, they spent No. 1 on Kool-Aid McKinstry, a defensive back they were not short of.
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
By-the-book stuff, Malik Nabers at the 4th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68
Rnd3
Michael Pratt
This one needs a full-page explanation: Michael Pratt in the 68th overall pick, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick81
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick104
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at slot 104 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick130
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
A curious use of pick 130. Cornerback and linebacker needed the pick; a defensive back in Khyree Jackson did not.
Pick141
Rnd5
T.J. Sanders
A conviction pick on T.J. Sanders at Round 5, Pick 5 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick154
Rnd5
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd is a better player than pick No. 154 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick182
Rnd6
Nelson Ceaser
Value said wait; Nelson Ceaser in No. 182 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick225
Rnd7
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith in slot 225 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick251
Rnd7
Zion Nelson
No drama and no debate, Zion Nelson went about where he belonged in pick No. 251. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
