Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Bears bet the future on Williams. The board says D+.

The phones were a trap the Bears kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.

Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Getting Rakestraw Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In pick No. 2 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick20 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Keon Coleman
No edge and no loss on Keon Coleman in pick 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick59 Rnd2 Tyler Nubin
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Tyler Nubin in No. 59, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75 Rnd3 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at slot 75 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick91 Rnd3 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
They barely believed it either: Ennis Rakestraw Jr. still on the board at the 91st pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick103 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at the 103rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick109 Rnd4 Trey Benson
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Trey Benson for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick121 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick 121 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick125 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
No drama and no debate, Ainias Smith went about where he belonged in pick No. 125. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick126 Rnd4 Isaiah Adams
They took Isaiah Adams at par in the 126th pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219 Rnd6 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at No. 219 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223 Rnd7 Myles Cole
Myles Cole at Round 7, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
