Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueA- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Starks should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a B.

Somebody in pick 75 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Malaki Starks, the No. 12 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

They will need Thornton Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In pick 11 they get a bendy edge with upside at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Mason Graham
Mason Graham in pick No. 43 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick99 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
They did well to land Ozzy Trapilo in slot 99, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick111 Rnd4 Dylan Fairchild
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dylan Fairchild at Round 4, Pick 10. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137 Rnd4 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dont'e Thornton Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
