Draft Grade — Bears

FutureB
Grand theft in Round 5, Pick 10: the Bears steal Bassa and grade out a B+. Whoever sat across the table from the Bears should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
However the rest shakes out, Bassa at that price is a win they earned. Reaching for Hawes left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Mike Green
No edge and no loss on Mike Green in pick 23; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick39
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon is a better player than the 39th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick41
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
No drama and no debate, Aireontae Ersery went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick54
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 54 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick72
Rnd3
Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas at slot 72 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in the 76th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick87
Rnd3
Charles Grant
By-the-book stuff, Charles Grant at the 87th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
They robbed the room for Jeffrey Bassa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick233
Rnd7
John Williams
This one needs a full-page explanation: John Williams in Round 7, Pick 17, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
A wild overpay on Jackson Hawes in pick No. 240, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor itch, scratched.
