Draft Grade — Rams
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureD+
The Rams drew a line under the quarterback search with Penix Jr.: F.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Rams reached some 91 spots for Devin Culp, and value like that does not grow back. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They have staked the next five years on Michael Penix Jr., which is the only story that really matters here.

A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left safety open, and the grade is the bill.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick19 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In slot 19 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in pick No. 75 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick83 Rnd3 Cedric Gray
They talked themselves into Cedric Gray at No. 83, and the board did not agree. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick104 Rnd4 Maason Smith
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Maason Smith. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick122 Rnd4 Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in the 122nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick129 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
They reached a country mile for Dallin Holker at the 129th pick, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick154 Rnd5 Xavier Thomas
They paid up for Xavier Thomas at No. 154 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick155 Rnd5 Daijun Edwards
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Daijun Edwards. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick162 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
A big swing on Ty'Ron Hopper at slot 162, well ahead of any board in the building. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick186 Rnd6 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 186 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick196 Rnd6 Walter Rouse
Taking Walter Rouse in Round 6, Pick 21 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick209 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at the 209th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick213 Rnd6 Devin Culp
Devin Culp at pick 213 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 217. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick226 Rnd7 Caedan Wallace
Caedan Wallace slipping to pick 226 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick254 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
A straight-up fair deal on Sam Hartman at the 254th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
