Draft Grade — Chargers

Neal Jr. should have been long gone. The Chargers pounced, and earned a D. When a board-topper like Marcus Neal Jr. slides to the 227th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Chargers did not.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. It is not that Coleman is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Maiava has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Dylan Stewart
In pick 22 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick42
Rnd2
Cam Coleman
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went wide receiver with Cam Coleman while clear needs at tight end sat open.
Pick55
Rnd2
Ellis Robinson IV
Somehow Ellis Robinson IV was still sitting there in the Round 2 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick75
Rnd3
Justin Scott
Justin Scott in No. 75 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Adam Trick
They took Adam Trick at par in Round 3, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick86
Rnd3
Luke Montgomery
Nothing to complain about; Luke Montgomery went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick87
Rnd3
Bear Alexander
Bear Alexander at slot 87 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick88
Rnd3
Jayden Maiava
They paid up for Jayden Maiava at pick No. 88 when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick100
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
A quiet steal in No. 100: Kade Pieper for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick123
Rnd4
Brandon Inniss
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Brandon Inniss, a wide receiver that was not the priority.
Pick154
Rnd5
Evan Tengesdahl
Evan Tengesdahl in the 154th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick202
Rnd6
Drew Azzopardi
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 23 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Pick216
Rnd6
Justice Haynes
They will replay Justice Haynes at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick227
Rnd7
Marcus Neal Jr.
Taking Marcus Neal Jr. in pick No. 227 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick230
Rnd7
Addison Nichols
Addison Nichols at pick 230 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick233
Rnd7
Stephiylan Green
A reasonable price with a little left over, Stephiylan Green in slot 233. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick243
Rnd7
Christian Alliegro
They robbed the room for Christian Alliegro here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick244
Rnd7
Noah Carter
Noah Carter in No. 244 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
