Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Commanders robbed the room for Johnson. Final grade: C.

The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Tez Johnson, the No. 100 name on the board, in No. 128.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.

The cost of the Hamilton reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Will Johnson
In slot 29 they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick61 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
They will replay Xavier Watts at pick No. 61 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick104 Rnd4 David Walker
No drama and no debate, David Walker went about where he belonged in No. 104. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick128 Rnd4 Tez Johnson
Somehow Tez Johnson was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179 Rnd6 Kalel Mullings
Kalel Mullings at pick 179 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick192 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board had Dont'e Thornton Jr. higher than Round 6, Pick 16, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick200 Rnd6 Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks at the 200th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick205 Rnd6 Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Fair-plus on Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick216 Rnd6 Karene Reid
Karene Reid at the 216th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick245 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton at No. 245 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick255 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at Round 7, Pick 39 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
