Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureC+
The Panthers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. The Panthers spent real capital to be 58 picks early on Stefon Thompson, and the board is going to hold them to it. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
On value alone, Kinchens makes the weekend a net positive.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 4th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick 27 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
A real head-scratcher, Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 33 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick35
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at slot 35 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Bralen Trice
The board fumbled Bralen Trice all the way to Round 3, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kamren Kinchens
They robbed the room for Kamren Kinchens here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick101
Rnd4
Cooper Beebe
Somehow Cooper Beebe was still sitting there in pick No. 101, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick169
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick180
Rnd6
Stefon Thompson
A wild overpay on Stefon Thompson in No. 180, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick222
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
They paid a round early for Trevor Keegan in Round 7, Pick 2, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
