FutureA-
The 49ers won the night they stopped Cornelius from sliding. Grade: A-. Call it larceny. Ajani Cornelius sat on the board until pick No. 172, and the 49ers did not need to be asked twice. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The cost of the Loop reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, with Will Campbell leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jonah Savaiinaea in No. 49. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick75
Rnd3
Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow in pick 75 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
They will replay Malachi Moore at the 112th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick113
Rnd4
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at the 135th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd4
Dillon Gabriel
Fair-plus on Dillon Gabriel, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick139
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Savion Williams in slot 139 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149
Rnd5
Mitchell Evans
A clean, defensible pick in the 149th pick with a little surplus value in Mitchell Evans. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick172
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius at No. 172 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick228
Rnd7
Alijah Huzzie
Alijah Huzzie at Round 7, Pick 10 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jaylen Reed
The board fumbled Jaylen Reed all the way to pick No. 229, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick232
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
They barely believed it either: Carson Vinson still on the board at the 232nd overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick255
Rnd7
Tyler Loop
They reached a country mile for Tyler Loop at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
