A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B-.

Nobody else had Lee Hunter anywhere near the 172nd overall pick. The 49ers did, by 23 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The 49ers indulged a want in Hill while a need in wide receiver, running back and other spots stayed open.

The Neal pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Kayden McDonald
In pick 28 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at pick No. 59 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92 Rnd3 Julian Neal
They let Julian Neal come to them and pounced at the 92nd pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick127 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
No drama and no debate, Parker Brailsford went about where he belonged in No. 127. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick133 Rnd4 Iapani Laloulu
A premium they did not need to pay, Iapani Laloulu a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139 Rnd4 Jyaire Hill
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 39 on Jyaire Hill with wide receiver, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick172 Rnd5 Lee Hunter
This one needs a full-page explanation: Lee Hunter in the 172nd pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
