Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA-
Grand theft in slot 171: the Bears steal Eichenberg and grade out a A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Tommy Eichenberg at the 171st overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Spending an early pick on safety with cornerback and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Every board in the league had Bishop lower, and that gap is the story.
In the end it comes back to Marvin Harrison Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick19
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In pick No. 19 they get juice off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
Kamren Kinchens at No. 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick51
Rnd2
JC Latham
Taking JC Latham in the 51st overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick72
Rnd3
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Somehow Ja'Tavion Sanders was still sitting there in slot 72, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at pick 75 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
They robbed the room for Brandon Dorlus here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick101
Rnd4
Audric Estime
A tidy little value on Audric Estime in the 101st pick, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick110
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
They paid sticker price for Ainias Smith in the 110th pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick111
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Cole Bishop while clear needs at cornerback and quarterback sat open.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at pick 123 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161
Rnd5
Sataoa Laumea
Circle this one: Sataoa Laumea at No. 161 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
They barely believed it either: Tommy Eichenberg still on the board at slot 171. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
