Draft Grade — Saints
Overall

FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Saints: B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Saints spent Round 4, Pick 35 on Patrick Payton, a name the board had a full 91 spots lower. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The offensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The back end got a real overhaul.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but offensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In the 1st pick they get a two-high chess piece at fair value.
Pick34
Rnd2
Arch Manning
Arch Manning at pick No. 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Zachariah Branch
They reached a country mile for Zachariah Branch at pick 65, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick135
Rnd4
Patrick Payton
They reached into another round for Patrick Payton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick141
Rnd5
Nic Anderson
A straight-up fair deal on Nic Anderson at the 141st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Jermaine Mathews Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
