FutureD
The phones sank the Chiefs this weekend: D-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Christian Mahogany, 40 picks early at the 58th pick.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Getting Laube where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick53
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the 53rd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick58
Rnd2
Christian Mahogany
A real head-scratcher, Christian Mahogany in slot 58 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Max Melton
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in pick 71; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick74
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
They took Brandon Dorlus at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick79
Rnd3
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in pick No. 79 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick88
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at pick 88 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jonah Elliss
They paid sticker price for Jonah Elliss in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick90
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Johnson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick91
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
They jumped the gun on Mekhi Wingo, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick92
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A straight-up fair deal on Brenden Rice at the 92nd pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick95
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kris Abrams-Draine at cornerback with quarterback open.
Pick120
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
No drama and no debate, Johnny Wilson went about where he belonged in slot 120. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick126
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in the 126th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick132
Rnd4
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in pick 132 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick152
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo at slot 152 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick159
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to No. 159. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick169
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
A conviction pick on Khristian Boyd at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
They liked Jordan Jefferson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 171. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick172
Rnd5
Kendall Milton
Kendall Milton at the 172nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick173
Rnd5
Dylan Laube
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dylan Laube at the 173rd overall pick is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Pick190
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
A reach on Jared Wiley in Round 6, Pick 15; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199
Rnd6
Jaden Crumedy
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaden Crumedy well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick219
Rnd6
Dominique Hampton
They paid up for Dominique Hampton at slot 219 when waiting would have done the job. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
