Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureC-
Conviction outran the board for the Chiefs, and it cost them: F.

Nobody had Dominique Hampton this high, and it is not close. The Chiefs reached 41 spots to get him at Round 6, Pick 18.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Goncalves where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.

Pick Analysis
Pick34 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in slot 34, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick47 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Tampa. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick64 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in No. 64. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick70 Rnd3 Austin Booker
By-the-book stuff, Austin Booker at Round 3, Pick 6 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick71 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. at the 71st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick89 Rnd3 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick 89 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick95 Rnd3 Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 3, Pick 32 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick104 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Johnny Wilson in the 104th pick, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick107 Rnd4 McKinnley Jackson
A conviction pick on McKinnley Jackson at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125 Rnd4 James Williams
A straight-up fair deal on James Williams at pick 125, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick132 Rnd4 Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves in slot 132 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick141 Rnd5 Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan at No. 141 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick159 Rnd5 Cornelius Johnson
They reached into another round for Cornelius Johnson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick173 Rnd5 Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy in the 173rd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick186 Rnd6 Kendall Milton
They paid a round early for Kendall Milton in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193 Rnd6 Dominique Hampton
A wild overpay on Dominique Hampton in pick No. 193, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
