Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall D+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureF
The phones sank the Chiefs this weekend: D+.

The Chiefs did not so much draft Dominique Hampton as overpay for him, 61 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Put together, it is a D+.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick37 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
A quiet steal in pick No. 37: Tyler Guyton for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick50 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Tampa. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick53 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick64 Rnd2 Patrick Paul
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at pick 64, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
No edge and no loss on Devontez Walker in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick69 Rnd3 Austin Booker
A conviction pick on Austin Booker at slot 69 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick95 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
They took Christian Mahogany at par in the 95th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick103 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at No. 103 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick105 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They went early on Cedric Gray in pick No. 105, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
They paid up for Johnny Wilson at the 110th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick120 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
They paid a round early for Mohamed Kamara in slot 120, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick132 Rnd4 Kitan Oladapo
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kitan Oladapo. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick159 Rnd5 Dillon Johnson
A reach for Dillon Johnson in pick 159; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick171 Rnd5 Kendall Milton
Value said wait; Kendall Milton in Round 5, Pick 35 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick172 Rnd5 Jared Wiley
A real head-scratcher, Jared Wiley in No. 172 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick173 Rnd5 Dominique Hampton
Dominique Hampton in Round 5, Pick 37 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
