FutureD
The Colts robbed the room for Rourke. Final grade: F. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Colts did exactly that with Tonka Hemingway in the 152nd pick.
Rourke falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with offensive lineman and edge rusher still on the board.
That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Denzel Burke
In slot 14 they get an island corner. More want than need.
Pick45
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
The board fumbled Malaki Starks all the way to Round 2, Pick 13, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick49
Rnd2
Domani Jackson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Domani Jackson at cornerback with offensive lineman and edge rusher open.
Pick65
Rnd3
Colston Loveland
Fair-plus on Colston Loveland, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick116
Rnd4
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at pick 116 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139
Rnd5
Phil Mafah
They liked Phil Mafah enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 139. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jamon Dumas-Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick152
Rnd5
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at the 152nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick193
Rnd6
Kurtis Rourke
Kurtis Rourke in No. 193 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick232
Rnd7
Germie Bernard
They talked themselves into Germie Bernard at Round 7, Pick 18, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
