Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
C
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB
The Chargers bled value on every deal, hence the C. Somebody took the Chargers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On value alone, Daniels makes the weekend a net positive. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
If Caleb Banks and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 55, where Emmanuel Pregnon graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick72
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
By-the-book stuff, Lee Hunter at No. 72 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
They took Bishop Fitzgerald at par in pick 106, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick130
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick172
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Pat Coogan. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick202
Rnd6
Jalon Daniels
Value with a capital V on Jalon Daniels in the 202nd overall pick, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252
Rnd7
Damari Brown
Damari Brown at slot 252 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
