The Colts did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Will Sheppard in the 140th pick, a good 28 spots before the room expected him.
Conerly Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Denzel Burke
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick44
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
No edge and no loss on Xavier Watts in pick 44; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick76
Rnd3
Josh Conerly Jr.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Josh Conerly Jr. in slot 76, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick81
Rnd3
Luke Lachey
A big swing on Luke Lachey at the 81st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick108
Rnd4
Tonka Hemingway
They reached into another round for Tonka Hemingway, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick140
Rnd5
Will Sheppard
They talked themselves into Will Sheppard at No. 140, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick172
Rnd6
Jo'Quavious Marks
Jo'Quavious Marks in the 172nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick204
Rnd7
Lander Barton
They reached a country mile for Lander Barton at pick No. 204, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
