Mensah should have been long gone. The Browns pounced, and earned a A-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Browns were there to profit. Darian Mensah, the No. 166 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 6 slot. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
If Iheanachor pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 27th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick30
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40
Rnd2
Trevor Goosby
They went early on Trevor Goosby in pick No. 40, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at the 62nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Cayden Green
Cayden Green at pick 71 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick94
Rnd3
Eric Singleton Jr.
The board had Eric Singleton Jr. higher than slot 94, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick106
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
A reach on D'Angelo Ponds in Round 4, Pick 6; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick141
Rnd5
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard at No. 141 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick145
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
A wild overpay on Max Iheanachor in the 145th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick150
Rnd5
CJ Baxter
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 150 with a little surplus value in CJ Baxter. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick204
Rnd6
Darian Mensah
They robbed the room for Darian Mensah here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick244
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
They paid a round early for Brandon Inniss in pick 244, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
