Larceny in the Round 7 slot lands the Bengals a B+, Gordon II and all. When a board-topper like Ollie Gordon II slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Bengals did not. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If Ezeiruaku pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped linebacker, which is a strange place to end up.
The Bengals indulged a want in Kennard while a need in linebacker and quarterback stayed open.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick46
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Donovan Ezeiruaku well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick53
Rnd2
Kyle Kennard
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kyle Kennard at edge rusher with linebacker and quarterback open.
Pick81
Rnd3
Deone Walker
The board had Deone Walker higher than pick No. 81, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick119
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
They robbed the room for Denzel Burke here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick153
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce in No. 153 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick193
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
They paid sticker price for Luke Lachey in pick 193, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick198
Rnd6
Kyle Williams
No edge and no loss on Kyle Williams in Round 6, Pick 22; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick235
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Circle this one: Ollie Gordon II at the 235th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick250
Rnd7
Clay Webb
Clay Webb at pick 250 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
