Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B+
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureB-
The Bengals won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+.

The real work happened on the phones. The Bengals fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

Bell has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. McCaffrey at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick49 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at the 49th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick80 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
They paid up for Michael Hall Jr. at slot 80 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick83 Rnd3 Blake Fisher
They jumped the gun on Blake Fisher, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick115 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaheim Bell. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick151 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 15 is lovely value for the quarterback. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick173 Rnd5 Cody Schrader
Cody Schrader is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand at pick 196 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick216 Rnd6 Brevyn Spann-Ford
They took Brevyn Spann-Ford at par in No. 216, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
Good price on Matthew Jones in slot 238, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick254 Rnd7 Dwight McGlothern
Nothing to complain about; Dwight McGlothern went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
