Draft Grade — Saints
Overall C
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureD
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Saints to a C.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Saints shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.

If Gore Jr. pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

If Dallas Turner and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In the 22nd pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
They took Xavier Worthy at par in Round 2, Pick 13, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick50 Rnd2 Mike Sainristil
No drama and no debate, Mike Sainristil went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick58 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
A reach on Kingsley Suamataia in pick 58; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick88 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at No. 88 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in slot 120, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick150 Rnd5 Christian Jones
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christian Jones at the 150th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick168 Rnd5 AJ Barner
No edge and no loss on AJ Barner in pick No. 168; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick170 Rnd5 Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau at No. 170 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick175 Rnd5 Cornelius Johnson
The board had Cornelius Johnson higher than Round 5, Pick 39, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick190 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
They read the board right and Kamal Hadden was the payoff at pick 190. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
A reach for Jaylan Ford in pick No. 199; a little patience would have been rewarded. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick239 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. in slot 239 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
