Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
C+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesC-
FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Saints get a C+. When the story of this class is written, it opens with J.J. Weaver at pick No. 254, a reach of 128 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
Stutsman falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
If Ashton Jeanty and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Fair-plus on Ashton Jeanty, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick40
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at No. 40. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick71
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
They did well to land Donovan Jackson in pick 71, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93
Rnd3
Savion Williams
Savion Williams at Round 3, Pick 29 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112
Rnd4
Que Robinson
Que Robinson at slot 112 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick184
Rnd6
Robert Longerbeam
Robert Longerbeam in No. 184 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick237
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in the 237th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick247
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger at the 247th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick248
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Thor Griffith well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick250
Rnd7
Chimere Dike
Taking Chimere Dike in slot 250 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick254
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
J.J. Weaver at pick 254 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
