The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C+. You can hear the double-takes from here. The 49ers took Nadame Tucker at the 139th pick, roughly 38 spots before his name belonged.
They banked enough surplus on Lance to cover a lot of smaller sins. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick38
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
They read the board right and Dillon Thieneman was the payoff at pick 38. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick45
Rnd2
Malachi Lawrence
A reach on Malachi Lawrence in Round 2, Pick 13; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Sam Hecht
Value with a capital V on Sam Hecht in the 106th overall pick, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick107
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick127
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at the 127th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd4
Kaleb Proctor
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kaleb Proctor in slot 138. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139
Rnd4
Nadame Tucker
Nadame Tucker in slot 139 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick167
Rnd5
Beau Stephens
A tidy little value on Beau Stephens in No. 167, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick183
Rnd6
Kaleb Elarms-Orr
By-the-book stuff, Kaleb Elarms-Orr at the 183rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
No edge and no loss on Jeff Caldwell in Round 6, Pick 14; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
