Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Bears found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: C.

The Bears spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With edge rusher, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.

Reaching for Rice left real value on the table behind him.

In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In slot 17 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick25 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick40 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
They jumped the gun on Xavier Worthy, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75 Rnd3 Michael Hall Jr.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76 Rnd3 Calen Bullock
By-the-book stuff, Calen Bullock at Round 3, Pick 12 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick77 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in the 77th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick88 Rnd3 Cole Bishop
A curious use of No. 88. Edge rusher, running back and other spots needed the pick; a safety in Cole Bishop did not.
Pick129 Rnd4 Roger Rosengarten
They paid sticker price for Roger Rosengarten in pick No. 129, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
