FutureD
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the C-. The 49ers spent real capital to be 80 picks early on Patrick Payton, and the board is going to hold them to it. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
If Kenyon Sadiq and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
Kenyon Sadiq is a better player than pick No. 27 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick33
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 1 is lovely value for the linebacker. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick44
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Nothing to complain about; Emmanuel Pregnon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick58
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at slot 92 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
No drama and no debate, Mike Washington Jr. went about where he belonged in the 127th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Value with a capital V on Davison Igbinosun in the 133rd pick, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick138
Rnd4
Zane Durant
They reached a country mile for Zane Durant at No. 138, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at pick 171 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
