The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Rivaldo Fairweather went at the Round 7 slot, a good 164 picks before the board was ready.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The 49ers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

The Williams pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
