The Harrell reach set a tone the Saints could not shake: F. The Saints put a flag in the ground for Tyler Harrell, 126 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A F, plain and simple.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Pratt.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with running back still staring back at them.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In pick 14 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick15
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Bo Nix
Fair-plus on Bo Nix, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 34, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick45
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in No. 45 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson in Round 3, Pick 1 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick101
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams at the 101st pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick142
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jarrian Jones in slot 142. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick150
Rnd5
Michael Pratt
Michael Pratt in pick No. 150 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick190
Rnd6
Fabien Lovett
They did well to land Fabien Lovett in pick 190, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick191
Rnd6
Tyler Owens
Tyler Owens in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick199
Rnd6
Carlton Johnson
Carlton Johnson at the 199th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick234
Rnd7
Tyler Harrell
Tyler Harrell at Round 7, Pick 14 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick239
Rnd7
Omar Speights
Omar Speights at No. 239 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
