Draft Grade — Saints
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Saints bled value on every deal, hence the D-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Saints took Antario Brown a full 141 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Saints indulged a want in Winston Jr. while a need in quarterback stayed open.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Lambert-Smith steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In the 9th overall pick they get a featured back at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than slot 34, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick40 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
Value said wait; Donovan Jackson in the 40th pick says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71 Rnd3 Darien Porter
They went early on Darien Porter in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76 Rnd3 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in Round 3, Pick 12 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick85 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in pick 85 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick93 Rnd3 David Bailey
They left a pile of value on the table to take David Bailey this early at the 93rd overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick110 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at No. 110 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick111 Rnd4 Joshua Farmer
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Farmer at the 111th pick, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick125 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Taking Jake Majors in pick No. 125 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick130 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kevin Winston Jr. at safety with quarterback open.
Pick141 Rnd5 Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham at slot 141 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick150 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 5, Pick 11 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick168 Rnd5 Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick186 Rnd6 Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong at slot 186 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick193 Rnd6 Trey Moore
Trey Moore in pick No. 193 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick199 Rnd6 Carson Vinson
They reached a country mile for Carson Vinson at pick 199, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211 Rnd6 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at the 211th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick221 Rnd7 Gentry Williams
A big swing on Gentry Williams at No. 221, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick229 Rnd7 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
Somehow KeAndre Lambert-Smith was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick248 Rnd7 Antario Brown
Antario Brown at the 248th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick254 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in Round 7, Pick 36, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
