The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Thomas: A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Xavier Thomas at Round 6, Pick 18 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Reaching for Sinnott left real value on the table behind him.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while interior defensive lineman went begging. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Rome Odunze and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In the 18th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 34th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick68
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at slot 68, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick87
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
The board had Ja'Lynn Polk higher than pick No. 87, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick90
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Khyree Jackson adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick91
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 28 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A real head-scratcher, Ben Sinnott in No. 103 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick137
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
A reach for Kitan Oladapo in pick 137; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick180
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
A big swing on Joe Milton III at pick No. 180, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas at pick 193 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick231
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
A tidy little value on Frank Gore Jr. in slot 231, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
