Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Texans a B-.

The J. Michael Sturdivant selection is the head-turner. The Texans reached 52 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.

That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Corleone at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick38 Rnd2 Emmanuel Pregnon
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Emmanuel Pregnon. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick40 Rnd2 Dontay Corleone
Dontay Corleone slid further than he should have, and the 40th overall pick is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick60 Rnd2 Monroe Freeling
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Monroe Freeling well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley in pick 69 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick74 Rnd3 Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange at the 74th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick106 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
They reached into another round for DeMonte Capehart, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick126 Rnd4 Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol in Round 4, Pick 26 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick128 Rnd4 Lander Barton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Lander Barton in pick 128, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick165 Rnd5 J. Michael Sturdivant
They left a pile of value on the table to take J. Michael Sturdivant this early at slot 165. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick243 Rnd7 Noah Thomas
Noah Thomas at pick No. 243 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick244 Rnd7 Haynes King
A reasonable price with a little left over, Haynes King in No. 244. It fills a real need, too.
