Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall C+
ValueC- NeedB+ TradesC FutureB-
The Commanders finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a C+.

The war room fell hard for Dominique Hampton, and it showed at Round 5, Pick 3: 95 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Hit on Michael Penix Jr. and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Michael Penix Jr.
In the 11th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick23 Rnd1 Troy Fautanu
In pick 23 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36 Rnd2 Bralen Trice
They reached a country mile for Bralen Trice at No. 36, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick40 Rnd2 Ja'Lynn Polk
A big swing on Ja'Lynn Polk at pick No. 40, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick67 Rnd3 Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan at slot 67 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick78 Rnd3 Roger Rosengarten
They left a pile of value on the table to take Roger Rosengarten this early at Round 3, Pick 14. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100 Rnd3 Dillon Johnson
A real head-scratcher, Dillon Johnson in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick139 Rnd5 Dominique Hampton
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dominique Hampton well ahead of where he belonged. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick152 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
They talked themselves into Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick 152, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick167 Rnd5 Edefuan Ulofoshio
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Edefuan Ulofoshio. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick222 Rnd7 Devin Culp
A wild overpay on Devin Culp in slot 222, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
