Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
Penix Jr. is the Commanders' new face under center. Grade: A-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Josh Proctor a full 107 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The whole projection now runs through Michael Penix Jr.; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. King falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In pick No. 10 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick17
Rnd1
Bralen Trice
In pick 17 they get a bendy edge with upside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A conviction pick on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 34th pick that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick42
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick66
Rnd3
Kalen King
They barely believed it either: Kalen King still on the board at Round 3, Pick 2. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 68th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
They liked Christian Mahogany enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 10. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100
Rnd3
Tyleik Williams
Nice patience on Tyleik Williams, who had no business lasting to pick No. 100. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick102
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at slot 102 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick104
Rnd4
AJ Barner
AJ Barner in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick139
Rnd5
Theo Wease
Theo Wease in pick 139 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick180
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper slid further than he should have, and No. 180 is lovely value for the linebacker. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick188
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
They talked themselves into Josh Proctor at the 188th pick, and the board did not agree. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick190
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
They paid a round early for Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the 190th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick223
Rnd7
Duce Chestnut
A tidy bit of business in pick 223, where Duce Chestnut graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
