The Chargers bet the future on Williams. The board says F.

The Chargers put a flag in the ground for J.J. Weaver, 40 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.

The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, tight end and other spots. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
