Grand theft in Round 7, Pick 10: the Vikings steal Jones and grade out a D-. The Vikings lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Adding Julian Blackmon by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In pick No. 11 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick15
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the 15th pick they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick42
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
No edge and no loss on J.J. McCarthy in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton in pick 46 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick82
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in the 82nd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick108
Rnd4
Beau Brade
No drama and no debate, Beau Brade went about where he belonged in slot 108. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Nelson Ceaser
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nelson Ceaser at the 130th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick148
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at No. 148 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Edefuan Ulofoshio
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Edefuan Ulofoshio at Round 5, Pick 24 is the proof. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick165
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in pick 165 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick179
Rnd6
Trey Knox
Fair-plus on Trey Knox, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick230
Rnd7
Sheridan Jones
Sheridan Jones at the 230th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick235
Rnd7
Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the quarterback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
