FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Vikings: B-. The curious call sets the tone. With edge rusher, safety and other spots still glaring, the Vikings used No. 120 on Beau Brade, a defensive back they were not exactly short of. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Brade has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick52
Rnd2
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke at Round 2, Pick 20 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick90
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
Michael Hall Jr. at the 90th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Audric Estime
Audric Estime in pick No. 98 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick120
Rnd4
Beau Brade
A want over a need in No. 120: Beau Brade adds a defensive back while edge rusher, safety and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at the 143rd pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick157
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Jack Nelson graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick161
Rnd5
J. Michael Sturdivant
Fair-plus on J. Michael Sturdivant, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick168
Rnd5
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha slipping to pick 168 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick179
Rnd6
BJ Mayes
They read the board right and BJ Mayes was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 4. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick241
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dwight McGlothern in pick No. 241. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
