Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Vikings. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent Round 5, Pick 1 on Quincy Riley, a name most had 40 spots down the list.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Starks.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick38
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks at pick No. 38 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm is a better player than pick 98 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tory Horton
They took Tory Horton at par in the 104th pick, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Phillips at Round 4, Pick 4 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at No. 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick139
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
This one needs a full-page explanation: Quincy Riley in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick145
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
A wild overpay on DJ Giddens in the 145th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick155
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
A conviction pick on Barryn Sorrell at the 155th pick that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick187
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They did well to land Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 6, Pick 11, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
