Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesD+
FutureB-
A passer of the future in Nix, and a B-, for the Vikings. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on Bo Nix, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
Every board in the league had Bortolini lower, and that gap is the story. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Brown steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Bo Nix
In slot 31 they get a franchise quarterback, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in pick 35, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick39
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
A wild overpay on Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
A straight-up fair deal on Kris Jenkins at the 42nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick66
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick92
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in No. 92, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 94 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick109
Rnd4
Max Melton
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at the 109th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick115
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. The roster fit checks out.
Pick138
Rnd5
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the 138th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick179
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanor Bortolini well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick222
Rnd7
Omar Brown
They robbed the room for Omar Brown here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
