Viet DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the 49ers. You could see the war room lean forward. Walter Nolen at slot 43 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Williams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in Round 2, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
They reached into another round for Ashton Gillotte, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick100
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They let Andrew Mukuba come to them and pounced at slot 100. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick113
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Emery Jones Jr. at pick 113, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Aeneas Peebles
Aeneas Peebles in the 138th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at Round 5, Pick 9 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160
Rnd5
Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick227
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Value said wait; Teddye Buchanan in pick No. 227 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
They liked Jaylin Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 249. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
No edge and no loss on Jackson Hawes in Round 7, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
