Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA+
McCarthy is the Bears' new face under center. Grade: D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bears shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In No. 9 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick13
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick26
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
They jumped the gun on J.J. McCarthy, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick43
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
A slide stopped in slot 43, with Quinyon Mitchell worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick44
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at pick 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick51
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 51st pick, value and slot in agreement. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at pick No. 75 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick111
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
Nothing to complain about; Matt Goncalves went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick123
Rnd4
Beau Brade
Beau Brade at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick127
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Will Shipley in pick 127 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick143
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They took Luke McCaffrey at par in slot 143, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
