Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans won the night they stopped Ward from sliding. Grade: B.

Somebody in pick No. 155 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Texans sat still while Cameron Ward, the No. 85 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

They trusted the board more than the depth chart.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In pick 24 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick41 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at slot 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick56 Rnd2 Xavier Nwankpa
Nice patience on Xavier Nwankpa, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick88 Rnd3 Jason Marshall Jr.
They took Jason Marshall Jr. at par in pick No. 88, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick120 Rnd4 Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in the 120th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick155 Rnd5 Cameron Ward
Cameron Ward at the 155th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick216 Rnd7 Ben Bywater
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Bywater at Round 7, Pick 24, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
